Fluminense and Vasco da Gama claimed their first win after a disappointing start to the second half of the Rio de Janeiro state championship, also known as the Rio Cup.

Fluminense won at home against Nova Iguacu 3-0 while Vasco da Gama beat home team Olaria 2-0.

After winning the Guanabara Cup, Fluminense got off to an embarrassing start in the Rio Cup by losing to Resende 1-2. Determined to win in front of their home crowd, the team played nearly perfectly and shutout Nova Iguacu.

Fluminense's first goal came in the 26th minute. Receiving a great pass from Deco, Fred quickly rolled the ball off to Rafael Sobis in front of the Iguacu goal to tap the ball into the center of the net.

Returning to the second half, Sobis attempted a long range shot at the goal. The ball deflected off Marcelinho and fooled keeper Jefferson, flying into the back of the goal in the 71 minute.

Matheus Carvalho added to the Fluminense lead in the 76th minute when Souza rolled the ball behind his back to the cutting midfielder who then angled the ball across the defence and into the far right side of the Iguacu goal.

Fluminense will attempt to win the Rio Cup and clinch the title of the 2012 state champions. Fluminense will face cross-town rival Flamengo on March 11.

Also in the second round of the Rio Cup, Vasco da Gama found its first win Saturday by beating Olaria 2-0.

Vasco da Gama got off to a quick start by taking the early lead in the 12th minute.

They increased their lead in the 25th minute.

Marlboro Man loves them, and because long, round noodles (some humans refer to them as ?spaghetti”) are cumbersome and unwieldy, I take the easy road and serve mine with rigatoni. .

• Meatballs
• 6 thick slices crusty bread
• 3/4 pound ground beef
• 3/4 pound ground pork
• 3 garlic cloves, minced
• 2 eggs, beaten
• ? cup minced flat-leaf parsley, plus more for serving
• ? cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese, plus more for serving
• ? cup whole milk
• ? teaspoon salt
• Freshly ground black pepper to taste
• ? cup olive oil
• Rigatoni and sauce
• 1 yellow onion, diced
• 3 garlic cloves, minced
• ? cup red wine (optional)
• one 28-ounce can crushed tomatoes
• one 28-ounce can whole tomatoes
• ? teaspoon salt
• Freshly ground black pepper to taste
• 1 teaspoon sugar
• ? cup minced flat-leaf parsley
• 12 fresh basil leaves, cut in chiffonade (optional)
• 2 pounds rigatoni, cooked al dente

• 1. Place the bread on a baking sheet. Bake for 30 minutes in a 200?F oven, or until totally dry.
• 2. Break the bread into chunks . . .
• 3. And pulse [in food processor] until the bread turns into crumbs.
• 4. Throw the meat into a large mixing bowl.
• 5. Add the garlic, bread crumbs, eggs, parsley, grated Parmesan, milk, salt, and pepper. Use clean hands to mix together until well combined.
• 6. Use a scoop to retrieve a small amount of the meat mixture . . .
• 7. And roll it in your hands to make meatballs (about 25). Place the pan in the freezer for 10 to 15 minutes, just to firm them up.
• 8. Heat the olive oil in a heavy pot over medium-high heat. Working with 8 to 10 meatballs at a time, cook them until brown but not cooked all the way through, 2 to 3 minutes per batch.
• 9. Remove from the pan to a plate while you make the rigatoni and sauce.
• 10. Add the onion and garlic to the pan. Stir and cook for a minute or two, until the onion begins to soften.
• 11. Add the wine and cook for another minute. (Just omit this step if you?re not using wine.)
• 12. Add the crushed tomatoes . . . whole tomatoes . . . salt, pepper, and sugar . . . And parsley and basil.
• 13. Stir the sauce to combine all the ingredients . . . Cover and reduce the heat to a simmer. Cook for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
• 14. Then throw in the meat-a-balls!
• 15. Stir gently, then cover and cook for 20 more minutes, stirring once or twice, until the meatballs are cooked through.
• 16. Heap the rigatoni on a large platter and pile the meatballs and sauce on the top. Sprinkle on some extra minced parsley and serve with extra grated Parmesan.

SA Olympic team seeks medals in five events - Sport - Mail ...

The South African Olympic team's medals are expected to come from five sporting codes at the London Games in July and August, according to a report on Wednesday.

"The medals would come from swimming, athletics, and maybe cycling, canoeing and rowing," South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) CEO Tubby Reddy told the Cape Times.

Reddy said Sascoc had maintained its vision of bagging 12 medals in London, which was created after the team won a lone silver medal at the 2008 Beijing Games.

Sascoc had spent R34-million on preparations for the Olympics and R15-million more to "deliver the team", he told the newspaper after the committee briefed Parliament's sport and recreation portfolio committee on Wednesday.

He said just over 100 athletes would be sent to the Games, but this could change if more sporting codes qualified.

The Olympic first team and paralympic team would be announced in June, and the Olympic second team in July. -- Sapa
