Sony's Spiderman: A World Without Apple | Business 2 Community

If you?re an Apple fanatic and are used to using your MacBook to search for information like sales tax compliance with state and local tax services, or your iPad for watching movies , or your iPhone for browsing on-the-go, you had better hope you never end up in the world of the Amazing Spiderman.

The 2012 movie from Sony reflects a world very much like our own, except the appropriate response to a dangerous spider?s bite is to don a spandex costume and fight crime, rather than head to the hospital. Intriguingly, it also seems this universe is one in which Apple never made an impact.

Personal Product Placement

The Amazing Spiderman shows us a whole host of high-tech gadgets and personal technology, from scientific research laboratories full of laptops and computers to teens using tablets to watch online videos of superheroes in action. The masked man himself even uses his smartphone from time to time.

In many ways it is a valid reflection of our own tech-obsessed society. Except, of course, that none of these products display the Apple logo. They are all proud Sony products.

It?s unsurprising ? after all, as The Amazing Spiderman is a Sony film, why would they wish to give any screen time to their competitor? Paid product placement has a fine tradition in all kinds of movies, from James Bond?s predilection for Aston Martin cars to the cringe-inducing reference to Converse shoes in I, Robot.

It only makes sense for Sony to cut out the middleman and just jam their own movies full of their available products. Microsoft?s Bing search engine also got a showing, rather than the much more popular Google.

Alternative Theories

Of course, real-world reasons for Apple?s invisibility are kind of boring. What is much more intriguing is to wonder what the in-film reasons are for Sony?s dominance. How could they explain away the Apple technology?

In our world, Sony has only a tiny fraction of the market ? accounting for less than 1% of US cell phone and tablet sales and less than 3% of personal computer sales. However, in the world of superpower-giving spiders, their products are ubiquitous.

Could it be that some kind of irradiated cockroach led Steve Jobs to abandon his company and instead devote himself to a life of crime-fighting? Maybe Sergey Brin and Larry Page chose another direction for their Stanford research project, discarding the idea of developing a search engine in favor of mechanized robots that could more effectively enforce their philosophy of not being evil.

Sony?s dominance could be due to something even more sinister ? perhaps they conducted some early research into mind-control, making their marketing and advertising super effective.

BMW designer credits Apple for white-car craze

BMW

"Prior to Apple, white was associated with things like refrigerators or the tiles in your bathroom. Apple made white valuable," said Sandy McGill, chief designer for BMW DesignWorks.

By Paul A. Eisenstein, The Detroit Bureau

White is the new black ? so to speak.? When it comes to the colors that American motorists tend to prefer, white has traditionally taken a back seat to black and silver.? But it has been gaining ground lately, taking over as the most popular automotive hue in some recent studies.

Credit Apple, says Sandy McGill, chief designer for BMW DesignWorks, who believes the Silicon Valley giant?s iPhones and iPads have had a direct influence on the choice consumers make when buying cars, as well.

McGill offers kudos to the late Apple founder and CEO Steve Jobs for transforming the public mindset.? "Prior to Apple, white was associated with things like refrigerators or the tiles in your bathroom. Apple made white valuable,? the designer told Motoramic.com.

Mexico Auto Output to Jump 38% in 3 Years

White has always been popular in Japan ? indeed, it?s still the overwhelming choice there. But it had faded from the U.S. sales charts, in part, because it can be so difficult to maintain.? It doesn?t take much dirt to send an owner scurrying for the car wash.

Silver and black, on the other hand, have been the colors of choice among automotive designers because they do such a good job of showing off a car?s curves.? Silver also is closely associated with luxury, buyers opting for its various hues to make their vehicles look a little more upscale.

Are Battery Car Sales Charging Up?

Together with white, they make up as much as 80% of the general automotive market in the typical year, with reds a favorite among sports car buyers.? But experts like McGill, who oversees color, materials and finish choices for the BMW styling subsidiary, thinks the American color palette is going to change.?

What shades are brightening up?? McGill and other experts list blue, orange and brown, among others.? Yes, brown, though not the flat, dull and boring hue that many experts had, just a few years ago, been predicting would vanish entirely from the automotive showroom.? Porsche delivered a shock when it highlighted a red-toned, metal-flaked brown with the launch of the new 911 last year.

There?s even an active Facebook group, The Brown Car Appreciation Society, of which this reporter is one of 600 active members.

Ford Betting Safety Will Sell New Fusion

In its annual forecast of color trends, paint supplier BASF Automotive Coatings said it anticipates a surge of ?naturally cultivated? tones, including ?nuanced? berry and copper hues, as well as brown, blue and green ? though the latter three will come in more subtle and organic versions of the traditional earth shades.

?There are signs from automakers and consumers that the desire for more color on the roads is continuing. We will be tapping into further color spaces, such as bronzes and emeralds,? says Gutjahr. ?The continued high value assigned to the notion of ecology may now again be signified by the color green.?

Predicting color trends is as much an art as a science and researchers look for all sort of indicators to figure out what shades will connect with consumers, including trends in the fashion industry.? But colors also are influenced by factors such as:

  • What you drive ? demand is very different for sports cars and luxury sedans.
  • Where you live ? blacks aren?t very popular in Sunbelt states but it?s the color of choice in New York, for example, and Japanese consumers overwhelmingly prefer white.
  • Even the state of the economy is a factor, buyers tending to opt for conservative shades during recessions while adopting more vibrant hues when times are good.

In Ohio, Romney and Ryan target women voters

Romney and Ryan in Powell, Ohio (Matt Sullivan/Getty Images)

Mitt Romney and his running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan, made a direct appeal to female voters Saturday, telling supporters at an Ohio rally that, if elected, they would do more to help women in business.

"Just a word to the women entrepreneurs out there," Romney said at a campaign event in Powell, Ohio. "If we become president and vice president, we want to speak to you. We want to help you."

The presumptive Republican nominee told the crowd that women are "more likely" to start businesses than men and "need our help."

"I want to speak to the women of America who have dreams, who begin businesses in their homes, who begin businesses out in the marketplace, who are working in various enterprises and companies," Romney said. "I want you to be successful. Our campaign is about making it easier for entrepreneurs, women and men, to start businesses and to grow businesses."

Preceding his running mate on the stump, Ryan made a similar appeal.

"We want every American to achieve her potential," the Wisconsin congressman said.

Their outreach comes amid polls showing a major gender gap heading into November's election. A Gallup poll released Thursday found Romney with an 8-point lead over President Barack Obama among male voters. On the flip side, Obama leads Romney among women by 8 points.

The GOP's standing with women was surely not improved by the controversy that erupted earlier this week over Rep. Todd Akin's suggestion that a woman could not become pregnant from "legitimate rape."

Both Romney and Ryan condemned the congressman's comments, and Akin, who is challenging Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill this fall, later apologized. But Democrats quickly moved to bring up the larger debate over abortion?an issue that Romney, who is pro-life, has tried to downplay in favor of building his campaign around jobs and the economy.

Romney aides privately worry the Akin controversy could hurt the GOP's larger effort to win over women this fall?especially suburban moms, who are considered a swing vote.

On the stump, Romney took his usual shots at Obama's handling of the economy. He told supporters that Obama had failed to create jobs and turn the economy around because his view on the economy "just doesn't square with the America you and I know.

At least 5,000 people turned out to see Romney and Ryan, in what was their first joint appearance in Ohio since Ryan was named to the GOP ticket. It was one of the largest and most energetic crowds Romney has attracted in Ohio?and more proof of why Romney aides walked back their plan of keeping the two candidates on a separate campaign track heading into the Republican National Convention in Tampa.

Tanker-bus crash inferno kills 36 in China

At least 36 people died in a fiery collision between a methanol tanker and a double-decker sleeper bus on Sunday in China's worst traffic accident in more than a year.

Both vehicles caught fire and only three of the 39 people onboard the bus survived the motorway crash, which occurred around 2:00 am, Xinhua news agency reported.

A total of 36 bodies were pulled from the debris and three people were taken to hospital.

The accident was the worst in China since a fire on an overcrowded sleeper bus carrying flammable materials killed 41 passengers in central China in July last year, according to the country's work safety watchdog.

Details of Sunday's crash -- which happened 200 metres (yards) from a motorway service station at Yanan city in northern Shaanxi province -- were still unclear.

Yue Jiuxiang, a local traffic police official in charge of the rescue operation, said most of the passengers were asleep at the time of the crash.

"Soon after the collision, the bus was engulfed by flames," he told state-broadcaster China Central Television.

"The front part of the bus was seriously damaged. Also most of the passengers were sleeping. This is why so many people died."

Yue said the bus was en route from Baotou in Inner Mongolia to the Shaanxi provincial capital Xian when the collision occurred.

Police were investigating the cause of the accident which happened on the Baotou-Maoming Expressway, which spans the length of China from the northern city of Baotou to the southern province of Guangdong.

An official at Yanan city government information department surnamed Liu told AFP: "The confirmed death toll is now 36. I don't have any further details."

China's roads are highly dangerous, with traffic laws and safety widely flouted, and truck drivers typically overworked.

Last year more than 62,000 people died in traffic accidents, state media said, citing police figures.

Vehicles carrying explosive materials -- which must first get permission from the police before travelling on the roads in China -- are involved in many accidents.

At least 20 people were killed in June near the southern city of Guangzhou when two trucks collided, triggering an explosion that set a timber mill under the expressway bridge ablaze.

Buses are also commonly involved in road accidents as operators often seek to cram as many people as they can into their vehicles to maximise profits and drivers hurtle down highways.

The July 2011 accident involved a double-decker which was reportedly only designed to carry 35 passengers but had 47 people on board.

It was taking people to southern Hunan province when it caught fire in the early morning.

Twenty-three people were killed and three injured in April when a bus and truck collided in the eastern province of Anhui.

Another collision between a tour bus and a truck the same month left 13 dead and 21 injured.

California Supreme Court throws out dispensary ban case

CaliforniaThe California Supreme Court dismissed review Aug. 22 of an important appellate court ruling affecting medical marijuana dispensaries throughout the state. Specifically, the High Court threw out the controversial decision in Pack v. City of Long Beach, which previously held that federal law preempted some forms of dispensary regulations. The Pack decision has been used by several municipalities, including Los Angeles and Long Beach, to suspend or ban outright the distribution of medical marijuana. However, yesterday's dismissal of the Pack decision throws into question the viability of such bans.

"This is an important moment for medical marijuana patients in California," said Joe Elford, chief counsel with Americans for Safe Access (ASA), the medical marijuana advocacy organization. "The California Supreme Court has essentially pulled out the rug from under local officials who have used the Pack decision to deny access to medical marijuana for thousands of patients across the state."

The reasoning used to dismiss the Pack case was that after the California Supreme Court decided to review the appellate decision, the Long Beach City Council repealed and replaced the ordinance with an outright ban on dispensaries thereby making moot the issues before the court. In addition, the petitioners in Pack "have now abandoned their federal preemption argument in favor of unrelated issues not raised or decided at any prior stage of this proceeding," according to the court.

Because the recently adopted dispensary ban in Los Angeles was predicated on the Pack decision, enforcement efforts by the City Attorney would be premature and potentially unlawful, ASA contends. Patient advocates vow to overturn the ban in Los Angeles and are currently gathering the fewer than 30,000 signatures needed to do so.

Several other appellate cases remain before the State Supreme Court pending review later this year or early next year. In one of the most closely watched cases, City of Riverside v. Inland Empire Patient's Health and Wellness Center, ASA has filed an amicus?"friend of the court" brief rejecting the notion that cities can ban local distribution of medical marijuana. "While municipalities may pass reasonable regulations over the location and operation of medical marijuana collectives, they cannot ban them absolutely," reads the brief. "These bans thwart the Legislature?s stated objectives of ensuring access to marijuana for the seriously ill persons who need it in a uniform manner throughout the state."

There are currently more than 50 cities and counties in California that have adopted dispensary regulatory ordinances, which are safely and legally accommodating the needs of their patients, as well as other members of their communities. An increasing number of studies also show that regulating dispensaries decrease crime and increase the quality of life in surrounding neighborhoods. (ASA, Aug. 23)

HOME IMPROVEMENT WALTIP.COM: If This Is Why Mitt

----PARIS,TEXAS, TOPIX FORUM DISCUSSION---We reported on the PEDC?s (Paris Economic Development Corporation) plan to get a coordinated plan through a unified plan by paying a Gregg County, Texas, firm to act as "third-party facilitators" at a meeting or two.

Which, in and by itself, is a heck?ova plan ?
Taxpayers, who pay the PEDC?s bills, coughed up at least $1,710 for the consultants. Evidently, an outside firm was needed to ?facilitate? the meeting to get a plan to get a plan, because. . . ?
Surely, the PEDC doesn?t believe no one in our Paris-Lamar County area knows how. . .?
The PEDC also have taxpayers on the hook to pay for a study by an Oklahoma retail development ?expert? they hired, and to pay for a long-term contract for his help in soliciting retail businesses to Paris (see Drowning on Dry Land).
Why is the PEDC even considering bringing in competition for local merchants and businesses? They have enough problems without the PEDC adding to them. The PEDC should be helping, not bringing in competition. It is as if the PEDC has never heard of the ongoing retail campaign urging everyone to "Shop Paris". (But, why is the PEDC involved in ?retail development?? It?s NOT something they're chartered to do...)
A PEDC employee, a ?community development specialist?, has moved or is moving to Georgia. The PEDC will pay her $800 per month for the next 10-months to handle "electronic media? and to maintain the PEDC website. But according to previous reports, the website and its maintenance is being done by CDSuites of Longview, Texas ( see job_creation).
And, no, it is not the money: It is the thinking that leads to the actions -
Taxpayers, through the PEDC, have guaranteed for ten years, $5.8 million for the financing of existing and new debt and around $1.8 million for operating capital for a local firm. The firm?s headquarters are in Paris, but they also have offices in Dallas, Waco, Sulphur Springs, and other Texas communities, as well as in North Carolina.
In exchange, we?re getting a promise of 25 new jobs within the next five years. And the PEDC has given a $105,000 ?cash incentive? for another 10 jobs at the company?s headquarters.
No report of how much money or what kind of guarantees, if any, taxpayers in the firm?s other locations chipped in or provided.
Shouldn?t Paris taxpayers know if the guarantees and/or operating capital they?re providing will be used to help underwrite the firm?s business operations in those communities? How could it not help . . . ?
But, how would we know?
These PEDC actions signal it can do what it wants, and spend the taxpayer?s money for whatever purpose they want, as long as they have some kind of semi-plausible deniability. This is a moral hazard, and weakens confidence in what they say and do.
In all these actions, the PEDC is funding jobs and job creation opportunities for communities ? and states ? in competition against us!
And the PEDC calls what they?re doing ?Economic Development"?
Our question is, ?For whom??

Gameloft shows off Wild Blood, their Camelot set, Arthurian Epic Unreal 3 game for iPhone and iPad

Speaking of Epic Unreal 3 powered games, Gameloft has recently shared the first look Wild Blood, their God of War-style action adventure title coming soon to the iPhone and iPad. You're Lancelot, you've bedded Queen Guinevere, and you've driven King Arthur so mad with jealous rage he's partnered with his insane half-sister, Morgana, to reap bloody, demon-fueled vengeance on you -- and all of Albion with you. VentureBeat got an early preview:

As one of the knights of the fabled Round Table, Lancelot naturally comes with a bevy of weapons and special abilities. Though you?ll start out with just one giant sword, your arsenal increases as you earn experience points; in the demo (shown on an iPad 3), a leveled up Lancelot dual-wields a pair of magical axes and shoots enemies from afar with his bow.

Combat leans toward a simple combo system that feels very responsive and smooth as Lancelot dodges and rolles his way through a large group (around a dozen or so) of demons. In a matter of seconds, these creatures became nothing more than a fine bloody mist.

Hopefully that means Excalibur makes an appearance, and cuts the realm in quarters. I really enjoyed God of War, and I've really enjoyed the relentless pace Gameloft has set for mobile gaming in general, and iOS in specific.

Anyone else eagerly anticipating pulling this sword form the App Store stone just as soon as inhumanly possible?

Chael Sonnen, Chris Weidman volunteered to take UFC 151 fight with Jon Jones

The UFC decided to cancel UFC 151 after Jon Jones passed on replacement opponents when Dan Henderson had to pull out because of an injury. Two of those opponents spoke up after the news broke on the UFC 151 cancellation.

Chael Sonnen started a Twitter beef with Jones last week after Sonnen announced his move up to light heavyweight. Sonnen took to Twitter again on Thursday.

Sonnen wasn't the only one to offer to step up and fight a five-round, championship fight on Sept. 1. Middleweight Chris Weidman also offered to move up a weight class and take the fight. Weidman was thought to have earned a middleweight title shot, but current champion Anderson Silva will not be fighting again before the end of the year.

Weidman saw a second chance at a title and and called UFC matchmaker Joe Silva.

"I heard that Dan Henderson was hurt," Weidman said to MMA Fighting. "I said, 'Wow, I'm not getting the shot at 185, let me get Jon Jones, he's freaking awesome."

Instead, Jones will have an extra few weeks of preparation before a fight with Lyoto Machida at UFC 152.

AP-GfK poll shows White House race still tight

WASHINGTON (AP) ? For all the attention it got, Republican Mitt Romney's selection of Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin as his running mate has not altered the race against President Barack Obama. The campaign remains neck and neck with less than three months to go, a new AP-GfK poll shows.

Overall, 47 percent of registered voters said they planned to back Obama and Vice President Joe Biden in November, while 46 percent favored Romney and Ryan. That's not much changed from a June AP-GfK survey, when the split was 47 percent for the president to 44 percent for Romney.

At the same time, there's a far wider gap when people were asked who they thought would win. Some 58 percent of adults said they expected Obama to be re-elected, while just 32 percent said they thought he'd be voted out of office. Majorities say they expect Obama to win regardless of their level of interest in the campaign.

Yet while partisans generally expect their own candidate to win, Republicans are less sure about Romney than Democrats are about Obama ? 83 percent of Democrats say Obama will be re-elected while 57 percent of Republicans think he'll be voted out of office.

One such Republican, 78-year-old Catherine Shappard of Dallas, said she's been alarmed to see even conservative commentators warning that Obama has a good shot at re-election.

"I think it's close," Shappard said. "A lot closer than I'd like it to be."

After just over a week on the campaign trail, Ryan has a 38 percent favorable rating among adults, while 34 percent see him unfavorably. Among registered voters, his numbers are slightly better ? 40 percent favorable to 34 percent unfavorable. Ryan remains unknown to about a quarter of voters.

Romney put the 42-year-old conservative chairman of the House Budget Committee on the ticket Aug. 11. The AP-GfK Poll was conducted Aug. 16-20.

Romney and Ryan will be crowned as the GOP presidential and vice presidential nominees next week at the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla. The Democrats hold their convention the following week in Charlotte, N.C.

The closely locked contest reflects deep partisan divisions across the country.

Among true independents, those who say they do not lean toward either party, the share of undecided voters is declining, with each candidate picking up new support at about the same pace. However, Romney maintains a small advantage with the group, with the backing of 41 percent of independents to Obama's 30 percent. Some 21 percent still say they support neither candidate.

Among all voters, 23 percent are undecided or say they have not yet committed to their candidate.

One independent voter, Frank Nugent, a 76-year-old retired sales manager from Pittsburg, Calif., said he always gives both parties a chance to win him over ? but not this time.

"Considering what the opposition is like, I can do nothing else but vote for Obama," he said. Part of his dislike for the GOP ticket is due to Ryan, he said, describing Romney's ticket mate as "further right that the bulk of the Republican Party." But while he'll vote for Obama, Nugent said he's disappointed in Obama's record.

Robert Hamrick, 39, from Cedartown, Ga., is going the other way. Although a registered Democrat, he plans to vote for the Romney-Ryan ticket, claiming Obama has been deceptive and failed to make good on his promises on the economy, jobs and government debt.

As for Ryan, Hamrick said: "He's very smart. He knows his stuff. He knows the finance. He can take apart Obamacare with ease." Hamrick is a former nursing home manager who left his job about four years ago in hopes of finding one with more security ? and has been mostly unemployed ever since.

The frail economy, with the unemployment rate hovering at 8.3 percent more than three years after the deep recession officially ended, remains the No. 1 issue. Nine in 10 call it important for them and half of voters say it is "extremely important," outpacing all other issues tested by at least 10 percentage points. Two-thirds in the poll described the economy as poor.

Registered voters split about evenly between the two candidates on whom they'd trust more to handle the economy, with 48 percent favoring Romney and 44 percent Obama. They are also about evenly divided on who would do more to create jobs, 47 percent for Romney to 43 percent for Obama. Among independent voters, Romney has a big lead over the president on handling the economy ? 46 percent to 27 percent.

Romney often appeals to his business background as proof that he could better manage the federal government, and the poll finds that overall, voters are more apt to trust him to handle the federal budget deficit over Obama, by a 50 percent to 40 percent margin.

But it's unlikely that Ryan's background in authoring Republican budgets will boost them as an issue in the campaign. The share of adults saying the budget deficit was deeply important to them dropped from 75 percent in February to 69 percent in the new poll.

Among those who rate the economy as the top concern is Mattise Fraser, a 52-year-old Democrat whose hometown of Charlotte is gearing up for the Democratic gathering. "We're in a crisis situation now," said Fraser, who said she plans to vote for Obama. She says she's a homemaker ? but not by choice. "The economy is crazy. There's no jobs."

Obama holds a clear edge among voters on handling social issues such as abortion, 52 percent to 35 percent, and a narrow one on handling Medicare, 48 percent to 42 percent. Medicare has grabbed a lot of attention as an issue lately, with Ryan's proposals to partly change the program drawing criticism from Obama and other Democrats.

Of those who said Medicare is an extremely important issue, 49 percent say they plan to vote for Obama and 44 percent for Romney.

Obama's approval rating held steady at about an even split, with 49 percent saying they approve of the way he's handling his job and another 49 percent saying they disapprove.

The president remains more positively viewed than Romney, and continues to be seen as more empathetic. Some 53 percent of adults hold a "favorable" opinion of the president, compared with just 44 percent who view Romney favorably. Obama also held a commanding lead among voters as the candidate who better "understands the problems of people like you," 51 percent to 36 percent for Romney. Some 50 percent see him as a stronger leader than Romney; 41 percent see Romney as stronger.

Michelle Obama remains more popular than her husband. Sixty-four percent of adults view her favorably and just 26 percent unfavorably, although that's down from 70 percent favorable in May. Ann Romney's favorable rating is mostly unchanged since May, with 40 percent viewing her favorably, 27 percent unfavorably and nearly a third declining to say.

Thirty-five percent overall say things in the nation are heading in the "right direction," up from 31 percent in June.

Melinda Cody, a 45-year-old undecided voter in San Diego, sees positives and negatives with both candidates ? and says she'll vote for the candidate who does the least bullying. "When they just run a negative campaign, it backfires," she said.

The poll involved landline and cell phone interviews with 1,006 adults nationwide, including 885 registered voters. Results for the full sample have a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.9, while it's 4.1 points for registered voters.

Amazon to hold press event on Sept. 6 (Hello, new Kindle?)

1 hr.

Amazon is holding a press event on Sept. 6, in Santa Monica, Calif., and that probably means exactly what you think it means: That a new Kindle ??or two, or three ??is on the way.

Analysts have suggested that several?new Kindle models, including a 7-inch upgrade that people have dubbed "Kindle Fire 2," could be on the way.

Richard Shim,?an analyst at NPD DisplaySearch,?says?that his sources claim that there would be three flavors of?Kindle 2?hitting production lines this fall,?as CNET's Brooke Crothers points out???one with no camera, one with a camera, and one with a camera and 4G cellular?connectivity.

There could also be an 8.9-inch version of the tablet at the very end of the year, which would compete more?directly with the current?iPad, he added.

This speculation is based on?orders placed for components, so things could certainly change. But given the timing, we suspect that we'll be seeing at least one shiny new Kindle next month.

In addition to those LCD-screen touch?tablets, Amazon has been rumored to be working on a glowing-screen version of its popular e-ink Kindle. It was expected sooner, as Barnes & Noble released its own light-up Nook in July.

All that, and maybe Amazon will even reveal?its own?branded smartphone, too. (But ...?probably not.)

But no matter what we think will happen, we'll be in Santa Monica on Sept. 6 for Amazon's announcement.

Study uncovers brain's code for pronouncing vowels

Wednesday, August 22, 2012

Scientists at UCLA and the Technion, Israel's Institute of Technology, have unraveled how our brain cells encode the pronunciation of individual vowels in speech. Published in the Aug. 21 edition of Nature Communications, the discovery could lead to new technology that verbalizes the unspoken words of people paralyzed by injury or disease.

"We know that brain cells fire in a predictable way before we move our bodies," explained Dr. Itzhak Fried, a professor of neurosurgery at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. "We hypothesized that neurons would also react differently when we pronounce specific sounds. If so, we may one day be able to decode these unique patterns of activity in the brain and translate them into speech."

Fried and Technion's Ariel Tankus, formerly a postdoctoral researcher in Fried's lab, followed 11 UCLA epilepsy patients who had electrodes implanted in their brains to pinpoint the origin of their seizures. The researchers recorded neuron activity as the patients uttered one of five vowels or syllables containing the vowels.

With Technion's Shy Shoham, the team studied how the neurons encoded vowel articulation at both the single-cell and collective level. The scientists found two areas?the superior temporal gyrus and a region in the medial frontal lobe?that housed neurons related to speech and attuned to vowels. The encoding in these sites, however, unfolded very differently.

Neurons in the superior temporal gyrus responded to all vowels, although at different rates of firing. In contrast, neurons that fired exclusively for only one or two vowels were located in the medial frontal region.

"Single neuron activity in the medial frontal lobe corresponded to the encoding of specific vowels," said Fried. "The neuron would fire only when a particular vowel was spoken, but not other vowels."

At the collective level, neurons' encoding of vowels in the superior temporal gyrus reflected the anatomy that made speech possible?specifically, the tongue's position inside the mouth.

"Once we understand the neuronal code underlying speech, we can work backwards from brain-cell activity to decipher speech," said Fried. "This suggests an exciting possibility for people who are physically unable to speak. In the future, we may be able to construct neuro-prosthetic devices or brain-machine interfaces that decode a person's neuronal firing patterns and enable the person to communicate."

Oil prices dip as traders eye Europe crisis talks

LONDON (AP) ? The price of oil fell Wednesday as investors kept one eye on Europe's efforts to solve its debt crisis and the other on the potential for Middle East tensions to disrupt supply.

Benchmark crude for October delivery fell 33 cents to $96.53 per barrel in midday trading in London in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract finished 71 cents higher at $96.68 in New York on Tuesday.

Greece's prime minister will meet will key European leaders this week to ask for more time to meet deficit reduction targets. The country's continued access to bailout funds depends on the negotiations.

Traders also awaited the release of minutes from the Federal Reserve's previous policy meeting for signs that it might lower interest rates. Lower rates tend to drive oil prices because they steer investors away from less-risky investments.

Analysts at Goldman Sachs, meanwhile, said tightening supplies and oil-producing Iran's standoff with the West over its nuclear program were factors to be considered in the direction of oil prices.

"In our view, it is only a matter of time before inventories and OPEC spare capacity become effectively exhausted, requiring higher oil prices to restrain demand, keeping it in line with available supply. Further, as tensions between Iran and the West escalate, the risk to crude oil prices is becoming increasingly skewed to the upside," the analysts said in an email commentary.

Brent crude, which is used to price international varieties of oil, fell 68 cents to $113.96 per barrel on the ICE Futures exchange in London.

In other futures trading on the Nymex, heating oil was down 0.2 cents to $3.11 a gallon. Natural gas was 4 cents higher $2.81 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Monga Sweet Cafe

Level 1, 217 Russel St, Melbourne

(Ph) 9654 4885

After the greasiness and spiciness of Crazy Wings, we wanted some sweet refreshing drink to wash it all down. Walked past Monga Sweet Cafe and decided to try it out =) I had heard about it in Boxhill, and how it serves genuine Asian, especially Hong Kong, desserts and Tea Cafe foods. There are actually quite a few Asian dessert places popping up in the CBD, like Dessert Story?(2 stores in the CBD now!).

You go up the stairs to the cafe, the first floor looks like a typical modern cafe, with some sofas for you to relax on as well. Unfortunately the first floor was full on this night, so they asked us to go upstairs. There's a sign saying "1970s Hong Kong Style Venue Upstairs" and wow! It really feels like you're transformed back to olden day Hong Kong! It's quite dark there, with many square tables of 4, looks kinda like a mahjong den =P

And there was a genuine Bus Stop sign right next to our table!

You can come here and play games (cards, chess etc) - but you do have to rent it. And there's a room with dart machines in it too! Though that doesn't feel very Honky lol =P

We were going to go for a set - drink + pineapple bun, but then E wanted to try the following 2 desserts so we decided to not get a drink and just go for the 2 desserts =P

First was the?Deep Fried Sweet Potato w/ Golden Syrup $4.50

We weren't going to go for something deep fried after the greasy chicken wings, but we're both suckers for sweet potato =P surprisingly wasn't too greasy and was very crunchy, though there was more batter than sweet potato lol. If only they were a bit more generous with the golden syrup =P

My favourite Honky dessert -?Hawker's Waffles ?(Peanut butter & condensed milk) $7.00

Doesn't look as appealing with the waffle drenched in peanut butter and condensed milk but the taste is what matters more! deliciousness <3 Crunchy waffles with a watered down peanut butter and condensed milk mixture - whoever thought of this mixture is a genius =)

This is the original one from the most famous place in Hong Kong <3

LOVE <3

Food~

7/10 - quite good, definitely feel like I've been transported back to Hong Kong =) whenever I feel slightly homesick will definitely come here! Wanna try some of the other savoury Tea Cafe foods too =)

Service~

4/5 - since we were one of the only 2 tables upstairs, the single waiter (I actually think he was the manager as he was in a suit!) was very prompt with our orders and bringing us water and everything =)

Atmosphere~

3/5 - bit too dark for my liking but love the Honky decor!

Will definitely be back =)

Unique solution to gene regulation

ScienceDaily (Aug. 21, 2012) ? Research on a unique vertebrate called the sea lamprey shows that more than a thousand genes are shed during its early development. These genes are paradoxically lost all throughout the developing embryo except in a specialized compartment called "primordial germ cells" or PGCs. The PGCs can be thought of as embryonic stem cells and are used, ultimately, for making the next generation of lampreys. Based on computational analysis, a significant number of genes that are lost in the embryo have signatures of "pluripotency," which suggests that they could also have undesirable effects if they were inadvertently turned on in the body. In effect, by undergoing programmed genome rearrangement and gene loss during embryogenesis, the sea lamprey "seals" the genes away in the small germline compartment so they cannot be misexpressed and thereby create untoward problems (such as development of cancer, for example).

The study was completed at the Benaroya Research Institute at Virginia Mason (BRI) and recently published as a featured article in Current Biology, along with an outside commentary.

The article authors are Jeramiah Smith, PhD, former postdoctoral fellow at BRI and now Assistant Professor of Biology at the University of Kentucky; Chris Amemiya, PhD, Principal Investigator at BRI and Professor of Biology, University of Washington; Evan Eichler, PhD, University of Washington Genome Sciences Professor; and Carl Baker, Research Scientist, University of Washington.

The discovery builds on the group's previous work published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in 2009. "Our new research confirms that lampreys experience rampant programmed genome rearrangement and losses during early development," says Dr. Amemiya. "The genes are restricted to the germline compartment suggesting a deeper biological strategy in order to regulate the genome for highly precise, normal functioning. The strategy removes the possibility that the genes will be expressed in deleterious ways. Humans, on the other hand, must contain these genes through other "epigenetic" mechanisms that are not fool-proof.

There are several implications of this work:

  • By understanding how programmed genome arrangement occurs so pervasively in lampreys, scientists can gain insight into how vertebrate genomes can remain stable and what genetic factors contribute to this stability.
  • Studies in distantly related species can provide unique insights into fundamental biological concepts and may be translatable to human health.
  • Identifying the molecular and developmental mechanism of how lampreys regulate their genome may have implications for disease treatment.

Sea lampreys are "basal" vertebrates that lack jaws and have unique properties that are of interest to scientists. This includes a completely different genetic toolkit for their adaptive immune system, which was also discovered, in part, by Amemiya's group, as well as remarkable powers of regeneration that allow them to completely recover from a severed spinal cord.

High throughput genomic sequencing, computational analysis and other state-of-the-art scientific advances made this research possible. Grant funding was provided by the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health and Howard Hughes Medical Institute.
